Imagine a world where bold ideas fuel economic transformation and social impact across the African continent and beyond—this is the vision of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Entrepreneurship Fund (SEF). Since 2020, SEF, in partnership with UBC, has empowered young innovators to transform challenges into opportunities to take these ventures to new heights.

Since its launch, the collaboration with UBC has played a key role in fostering entrepreneurship and supporting the development of impactful ventures. Led by Innovation UBC’s engagement team, the program offers expert-led workshops, intensive training, and personalized coaching sessions. This partnership equips them with the proper mentorship, resources, and guidance.

On November 15, 2024, twelve finalists took the stage at the Scholars Entrepreneurship Fund Showcase to pitch their innovative venture ideas, selected from an initial pool of 19 applicants. These scholars presented a diverse range of solutions aimed at tackling social and environmental challenges.

The event featured a total cash prize of $27,000, intended to provide seed funding to propel these ventures forward. Congratulations to the recipients:

  • First Prize ($10,000): Vuga - By Yasmin and Forgive, both Master of Data Science Scholars, this venture impressed the judges with its innovative approach and potential for impact.
  • Second Prize ($7,000): Ecofreak - By Brian and Chrispus from the Master of International Forestry program, their project stood out for its sustainability focus and scalability.
  • Third Prize ($5,000): EcoRice - By Edwin, a Scholar in the Master of International Forestry, this venture offered creative solutions in the agricultural sector.
  • People’s Choice Award ($2,000): WaterBeta - Chosen by popular vote, this venture by two Scholars in the Master of Land and Water Systems program highlighted community engagement and innovative water management solutions.
  • Other winners ($3,000): Luxe Estates - Chosen by the UBC engagement team for their energetic participation throughout the workshops won $1,000 each to support their ventures.
