Keeping vaccines cool where power is unavailable

Dr. Göran Fernlund is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Engineering at UBC. Dr. Fernland received grant funding totaling $242,495 from the Clinton Health Access Initiative to design an improved cooler for vaccine storage in developing nations where power is often unavailable. The ideal storage temperature for vaccines is a narrow band; where it is too warm vaccines will quickly spoil, and if frozen will be rendered useless. Dr. Fernland’s improved design will keep vaccines at their ideal storage temperature for days at a time.
