In February 2023, it was announced that British Columbia would become the first Canadian province to offer free prescription contraception.
Through a collaboration between UBC and BC Women's Hospital, and a study entitled Contraception Cost-Effectiveness in British Columbia — led by Wendy V. Norman, a professor in UBC’s Department of Family Practice and an associate member in both the School of Population and Public Health, and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology — researchers mobilized UBC research into national healthcare policy change through collaboration with government, community leaders and partner advocates.
